Pantai Merang, located about 30km to the north of Kuala Terengganu lies within the district of Setiu, Terengganu. Those who wish to go to Redang Island or Lang Tengah Island would have to pass this beach as this is where the main jetty (the departure point) is situated to get to the islands. It seems unfortunate that Merang is often mistaken for Marang (lies in the south of Terengganu) due to the likeness of its name.
In recent years however, with the advent of beautiful beach resorts such as the Aryani, Sutra Beach resort and Merang Suria Resort, Merang beach has gained popularity with beach lovers and tourist. Many who plan to go to the islands, usually spend a day or two here to enjoy the beautiful beach here. The swaying coconuts and casuarina trees by the shores of the beach provide shade as vacationeers ax and enjoy the cool sea breeze.
There is also a public park area on the beach which is undoubtfully beautiful and most relaxing to those who wish to picnic here. Another good spot to visit is the observatory station of University Darul Iman. The observatory is used for sky gazing and to determine the beginning of special months in the Islamic calender. Perched on top of a hill, the observatory provides a magnificent view of Pantai Merang aswell as the outlines of the nearby islands
